CONTEXT:

Student Assignment– Using the General Social Survey 2008 dataset, pick two variables that you will use to examine a research question (e.g., what is the relationship between religiousness and political views?).  Write a literature review including four scholarly, empirical articles that are relevant to your research question.

Library Instruction– Students attended one instruction session, the primary learning outcome: Students will identify relevant, scholarly, empirical articles for their research question.  The librarian instructed them on (1) distinguishing an empirical article from a non-empirical article, (2) how to move from their research question to an effective search strategy, and (3) using Sociological Abstracts (and other relevant databases) to find relevant articles for their assignment.  LibGuide: http://research.library.gsu.edu/soci3020

Assessment– The librarian received all the students’ papers at the end of the semester and used the above rubric to assess them.
